Shout-Out

A shout-out is a direct, public recommendation or mention of a brand, product, or account by a creator within their content. It is one of the most straightforward formats in influencer marketing - the creator explicitly directs their audience's attention toward the brand, typically including an endorsement and a call to action. Shout-outs range from organic mentions to paid placements and are a staple of both influencer-brand partnerships and creator cross-promotion.

What is a Shout-Out?

In its simplest form, a shout-out is the creator saying - verbally or in text - "check out [brand/account], I really recommend it." This can appear as:

  • A verbal mention in a YouTube video or podcast
  • A dedicated Instagram Story frame saying "AD: use my code CREATOR for 15% off at @brandname"
  • A caption mention alongside a product post
  • A TikTok video opened or closed with a brand recommendation
  • A dedicated post solely to promote a brand (less common, as audiences resist overtly ad-like content)

In the creator-to-creator context, shout-outs are used as a growth tactic - two creators with compatible audiences promote each other to expose their follower bases to the other's content (also called S4S: shout-out for shout-out).

Shout-Outs in Brand Campaigns

For brands, a creator shout-out provides:

Warm audience endorsement. When a creator whose audience trusts them explicitly recommends a product, that recommendation carries social proof that no paid ad can replicate. The trust is borrowed from the creator-audience relationship.

Direct response capability. Shout-outs paired with promo codes, affiliate links, or limited-time offers are effective direct response tools. The creator's endorsement drives urgency that accelerates purchase decisions.

Low production overhead. A shout-out requires no campaign shoot, no elaborate concept development. A creator can deliver a genuine, in-context mention within their existing content format - making it a cost-efficient format relative to full content integrations.

Audience direction. Shout-outs can direct an audience to follow a brand account, visit a website, join a waitlist, or download an app - making them versatile for multiple campaign objectives beyond purchase.

Shout-Out vs. Full Integration

Brands must choose between a shout-out and a full content integration based on campaign objectives:

| Format | Typical cost | Content depth | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shout-out | Lower | Brief mention | Awareness, follower growth, promo code activation |
| Full integration | Higher | Detailed showcase | Product education, demonstration, storytelling |

A shout-out is appropriate when the brand is already well-known and the goal is reminder messaging, promo activation, or account growth. A full integration is needed when the product requires demonstration, explanation, or brand storytelling.

Disclosure Requirements

Paid shout-outs are advertising. Under FTC guidelines (US), ASA guidelines (UK), and ARPP guidelines (France), paid mentions must be clearly disclosed:

  • Using labels like "AD", "PAID PARTNERSHIP", "SPONSORED", or "#ad"
  • Placing the disclosure at the beginning of the caption (not buried below "more")
  • For Stories: a visible label within the frame, not just in a caption viewers must tap to expand

Organic shout-outs (genuine unprompted mentions) do not require disclosure - and are often more valuable precisely because they are genuinely unsolicited. Brands tracking organic mentions via social listening can identify creators already talking about their products and convert them to formal partnerships.

Shout-Out for Shout-Out (S4S)

Between creators, shout-outs are often exchanged mutually - Creator A promotes Creator B to their audience and receives a promotion in return. This is a common organic growth tactic, particularly in niche communities where complementary creators collaborate to grow each other's following. The S4S format has declined in value as audiences have become more attuned to recognising inauthentic cross-promotions, but remains viable when the two creators genuinely complement each other.
