Account Takeover

An account takeover is a campaign format in which a guest creator - typically an influencer - is given temporary control of a brand's social media account to produce and publish content directly. Conversely, a brand may take over an influencer's account. The format creates mutual audience exposure and a genuine novelty that standard sponsored posts cannot replicate.

What is an Account Takeover?

In a traditional influencer partnership, the creator posts to their own account and the brand hopes to be discovered by the creator's followers. In an account takeover, the dynamic shifts: the influencer's voice and content appear on the brand's channel, or the brand's team appears on the influencer's channel.

The result is a distinct form of cross-community exposure:

  • The influencer's fans may follow the brand's account to continue seeing their favourite creator's content
  • The brand's existing followers are introduced to the influencer and may become followers of the creator
  • Both parties generate content that neither would produce alone

Takeovers can run for hours, a day, a weekend, or a themed period (a live event, a product launch, a conference).

Types of Account Takeovers

Influencer takes over brand account. The most common format. An influencer is given access to the brand's Instagram Stories, TikTok, or Twitter/X account and posts in their own authentic style for a defined period. The brand's audience sees a new creative voice; the influencer's audience may tune in knowing their favourite creator is "appearing" on the brand's channel.

Brand takes over influencer account. Less common and requires a highly trusted relationship. The brand team posts content directly to the creator's account - often used for major product launches or events where the influencer is physically attending and the brand team is managing content.

Influencer-to-influencer takeover. Two creators swap accounts, each posting to the other's channel. Primarily a cross-promotion strategy between creators with complementary audiences.

Planning a Successful Takeover

Key elements of a well-executed takeover:

  • Clear creative brief - define the content themes, format, tone, and any mandatory brand mentions, while giving the creator enough freedom to maintain their authentic voice
  • Technical access management - use platform delegation tools (Instagram's "Add Guest Poster" feature) rather than sharing passwords; define exactly what the creator can and cannot post
  • Audience priming - announce the takeover in advance to both the brand's and influencer's audiences to build anticipation and maximise tune-in
  • Real-time monitoring - a brand team member should be available during the takeover to review content before it posts if the platform allows, or to respond quickly to issues
  • Clear end point - define exactly when access ends and revoke it promptly

Measuring Takeover Performance

Track new followers gained during the takeover period, Story or post engagement compared to the brand's baseline, audience sentiment in comments, and reach beyond existing followers. For influencer accounts, track cross-follower growth on both accounts post-takeover.
