The at sign (@) - also called the "at symbol" or "mention symbol" - is the character used on social media platforms to tag or mention another user's account directly in a post, comment, caption, or message. Typing @username creates a clickable link to that account and notifies the tagged user. In influencer marketing, the @mention is one of the most fundamental interaction mechanics: it is how brands are acknowledged in creator content, how creators are credited in brand posts, and how partnerships become visible to both audiences.
What is an @mention?
When a user types @username in a social media post or comment:
- The text becomes a clickable hyperlink to the mentioned account's profile
- The mentioned account receives a notification
- The post may appear in the mentioned account's "tagged posts" or "mentions" section
- On some platforms, the post gains additional discoverability through the mentioned account's ecosystem
@mentions are distinct from hashtags (#topic) - mentions reference specific accounts; hashtags categorise content by topic.
@mentions in Influencer Marketing
Campaign deliverable requirements. Most influencer contracts specify that the brand's official @handle must be mentioned in the caption or on-screen text of every piece of sponsored content. This ensures:
- The brand's account is credited and notified
- The brand's profile appears linked in the content
- Audiences can navigate directly to the brand from the creator's post
Brand discovery for new audiences. When a creator with 200K followers mentions @brand in a caption, a portion of that creator's audience will tap the link and visit the brand's profile for the first time. The @mention functions as a traffic-driving mechanism - not just an attribution tool.
Community management. Brands routinely monitor @mentions to track who is talking about them organically. Social listening for @mentions surfaces:
- Organic creator advocacy (unprompted mentions) - candidates for formal partnership outreach
- Customer feedback and service issues that need response
- UGC content suitable for reposting
Partner acknowledgement. When brands repost influencer content or acknowledge creator partnerships on their own channels, @mentioning the creator gives the creator appropriate credit, notifies them of the repost, and exposes the brand's audience to the creator's profile.
Correct @mention Usage in Campaign Briefs
When briefing creators on @mention requirements, specify:
- The exact account handle(s) to use (brands often have multiple accounts across markets)
- Whether the mention should appear in the main caption or in a Story frame
- Whether an image tag (in-photo tag) is required in addition to a caption mention
- The position of the mention in the caption (first mention vs. hashtag section)
@mentions and Platform Policies
Most platforms limit the number of @mentions allowed per post to prevent spam (typically 5–10 accounts per post). Mentioning more accounts than the platform allows typically results in the excess mentions not being processed as links.
