Community event

A community event is a one-off or recurring brand-hosted gathering designed to strengthen relationships among customers, members, advocates, or participants through shared experience, participation, and feedback rather than primarily maximizing immediate media reach.

French equivalent: Événement communautaire. Related terms: influencer event, Meet-up, Live Audience Experience, experiential marketing, brand community.

Why it matters in influencer marketing

In influencer marketing, a community event helps turn attention into participation. It lets a brand listen to customers, recognize active members and move a relationship beyond a single published post.

How brands use it

Brands use community events for workshops, clubs, member dinners, product sessions, trials, recurring rituals or hybrid formats where creators, customers and experts each have a defined role. See the TANKE article Influencer Events vs Community Events.

What it is not

  • Influencer event: primarily designed for external distribution, content and visibility.
  • Meet-up: a gathering format, not necessarily a full relationship strategy.
  • Live Audience Experience: a TANKE concept connecting physical events, creators, UGC, PR and amplified audiences.
  • Experiential marketing: the wider field of brand experience.
  • Brand community: the community itself. The event is a mechanism, not the whole community.

Core design choices

  • Purpose: learning, retention, advocacy or feedback.
  • Audience: customers, members, prospects, advocates, experts or creators.
  • Mechanic: participation, ritual, co-creation, service and moderation.
  • Rhythm: one-off, seasonal or recurring.
  • Follow-up: opt-in, useful content, next invitation, contribution or referral.

KPI categories and limitations

Useful KPIs include repeat attendance, in-room activity, feedback quality, referrals, CRM or member opt-in, contribution, retention and repeat purchase by cohort. Room size, earned media or attendance alone do not prove loyalty or incrementality.

TANKE point of view

Depth does not mean small or unmeasurable. A good community event measures behavior and relationship progression, not only guest count. The strongest strategy often links creator attention to an owned relationship.

FAQ

Is a community event always small?

No. Depth does not necessarily mean small. The key is meaningful participation and relationship progression, not only the size of the room.

How is it different from an influencer event?

An influencer event primarily seeks external distribution and content. A community event primarily seeks participation, feedback, loyalty and advocacy.

How is it different from a Meet-up?

A Meet-up can be one community event format, but the word mostly describes a gathering. Community event describes the strategic role of the gathering within a brand community.

Which KPIs should brands track?

Repeat attendance, participation, feedback, opt-in, referrals, contribution, retention or repeat purchase by cohort, with careful attribution limits.
