Dynamic ad insertion
Dynamic ad insertion is a delivery mechanism that adds or replaces advertisements when content, especially a podcast episode, is distributed, without permanently embedding them in the editorial master file; it describes ad delivery rather than the sponsorship relationship, usage permission, programmatic buying or a creator’s personal recommendation of the advertiser.
French equivalent : Insertion publicitaire dynamique.
Why it matters
A campaign can change across previously published episodes without re-editing their editorial content. Its usefulness depends on hosting capabilities, available slots and the agreement. The mechanism can serve directly negotiated sponsors without programmatic auctions.
Practical operations
The brand and creator approve the sponsor, message, exclusions and campaign duration. The publisher specifies eligible back-catalog episodes, slots, delivery end dates and any ad-free versions. The technical operator configures insertion and provides reports. Clear voice and creative permissions separately; do not portray a third-party ad as the host’s personal opinion.
Measurement
Track ad deliveries using the provider’s stated definition, pacing, exclusions and traceable visits or conversions. An episode download does not prove that an advertisement was heard. Document counting rules and attribution limits before comparing CPMs.
Not to be confused with
Sponsorship is the commercial relationship; licensing provides permissions; dynamic insertion delivers the ad. It does not inherently involve auctions, individual targeting or creator endorsement. An advertisement permanently edited into an episode uses a different delivery method.
TANKE point of view
Our recommendation: treat campaign duration, eligible back catalog and exclusions as editorial decisions as well as technical settings. Substack’s 21 October 2026 announcement offers early-access signups, not general availability; the marketplaces it describes remain future and optional.

FAQ
Is dynamic ad insertion the same as sponsorship?
No. Sponsorship defines the commercial relationship, while dynamic insertion delivers the advertisement; usage permissions remain separate.
Does it imply creator endorsement?
No. An advertising slot does not by itself constitute a personal recommendation or a host-read message.
Can it affect older episodes?
Yes, where hosting capabilities and rights allow. The agreement should specify eligible back-catalog episodes, duration and exclusions.
