Quick definition

Share of Influence is the percentage of brand mentions published by the creators of a category that refer to a given brand over a set period. It shows where a brand stands against competitors in the creator conversation and reveals the communities where it is under-represented.

French equivalent: Part d’influence

Why Share of Influence matters for influencer marketing

Share of Influence adds competitive context to isolated campaign totals. It helps teams investigate underserved niches, assess creator coverage and compare ongoing partnerships, product seeding and campaign bursts. It can be calculated in a simple spreadsheet and gives teams a shared indicator to steer creator programs.

The term overlaps with Influencer Share of Voice and has no universal formula. This entry uses a transparent mention-based method within a selected creator panel, not a proprietary score. Treat it as a presence diagnostic alongside cost and outcome evidence, such as brand lift, rather than an automatic budget allocation rule.

How it works in a campaign

For this method, mention-based Share of Influence (%) = 100 × eligible brand–post pairs for the focal brand / eligible pairs for all monitored brands, including the focal brand. A post mentioning A twice counts once for A; a post mentioning A and B counts once for each. The denominator counts pairs, not unique posts. A zero denominator means N/A. Calculation example, illustrative data: A = 40, B = 100 and C = 60, totaling 200 pairs; A receives 40 / 200 × 100 = 20%. One in five eligible observations concerns A, not one in five buyers.

Before launch, document:

  • the category, territory, audiences, platform and observation period;
  • the panel, selected before inspecting winners using relevance and credibility criteria, including competitor-relevant creators;
  • the monitored brands, including your own, and coverage limitations;
  • post URLs, dates, creators and eligibility rules in an auditable spreadsheet;
  • paid, gifted, affiliate, organic and unknown sponsorship status as separate cuts;
  • panel stability, methodology changes and the collection timestamp.

KPIs and signals to watch

  • absolute mentions, denominator and percentage-point movement;
  • observation coverage and concentration by creator;
  • sentiment analysis to separate presence from approval;
  • comparable interactions, not qualified engagement without an explicit qualification rule;
  • platform, local market and sponsorship-status breakdowns.

Common mistakes

  • presenting the monitored set as the entire market;
  • mixing private own-brand metrics with public-only competitor interactions;
  • treating missing observations as zero;
  • assuming a higher share means higher absolute activity;
  • equating mentions with persuasion, sales or profitability.

Practical perspective

At TANKE, we recommend setting a baseline, a contextual target and a review cadence before changing a creator program. Weak coverage can justify investigating new communities; concentrated interactions call for content and sentiment review. Our influencer marketing KPI guide expands the measurement framework beyond this definition. Budget choices should combine costs, audience fit and outcome evidence, recognizing influencer attribution limits rather than automatically rewarding another share point. Compare local markets separately before combining incompatible totals.

FAQ

How do you calculate Share of Influence?

Mention-based Share of Influence divides the focal brand’s eligible brand–post pairs by eligible pairs for every monitored brand, then multiplies by 100. A spreadsheet is sufficient when the panel, brand set and observation period are documented. Repeated mentions of the same brand within one post count once. With a zero denominator, report N/A rather than zero percent.

How does Share of Influence differ from Share of Voice?

Share of Influence overlaps with Share of Voice. Share of Voice is a broader family of relative-presence measures and can already cover creators using mentions, reach or engagement. Share of Influence here specifies relevant voices and a declared signal, not an inherently superior quality score. When both methods use the same panel and signal, their results can coincide.

How do you choose the scope to measure Share of Influence?

For Share of Influence, define the category, market, audience, platform and period before examining results. Select creators for relevance, including voices outside your existing partners. Keep the panel stable and apply the same collection rules to all brands. Use public observations or lawful exports, respect personal-data constraints, and disclose inaccessible content or metrics instead of treating missing data as zero.

What is a good Share of Influence?

There is no universal benchmark for a good Share of Influence: the result is read against the monitored competitors and through its trend from one period to the next. A Share of Influence growing faster than competitors’ shares signals a gain in creator presence. Cross it with engagement-based share and sentiment, because strong presence proves neither persuasion nor sales.
