SoMoLo

SoMoLo stands for Social, Mobile, Local - a marketing framework that describes the convergence of three dominant digital consumer behaviours: using social media, on mobile devices, to discover and engage with local businesses and experiences. In influencer marketing, SoMoLo represents the strategic intersection at which creator-driven campaigns are most effective for businesses with a physical presence - restaurants, retail stores, hotels, spas, local service providers, and brick-and-mortar brands.

What is SoMoLo?

SoMoLo was coined around 2012 as mobile internet usage overtook desktop and local search became a major driver of physical foot traffic. The three components:

Social - consumers are discovering businesses and making decisions through social media recommendations, reviews, and content from people they trust. A recommendation from an influencer or peer carries more weight than a traditional directory listing or advertisement.

Mobile - the majority of social media consumption and local search happens on smartphones. Consumers are using their phones to discover restaurants, shops, and services in real time - often while already out and about.

Local - search and social behaviours are increasingly location-contextualised. "Near me" searches, geotags, location check-ins, and local recommendation content connect social discovery to physical places.

The intersection: a consumer sees a creator's Instagram Story from a local restaurant, checks the geotag, saves the location, and visits that week. This is SoMoLo in action.

SoMoLo in Influencer Marketing Campaigns

Local creator partnerships. For local businesses, partnering with geo-relevant micro and nano-influencers with audiences in the same city is far more efficient than partnering with national creators whose audiences are geographically dispersed. A Paris-based restaurant benefits from a Paris creator with 10K local followers far more than from a national creator with 200K followers spread across France.

Geotagging and location tagging. Influencer content featuring geotagged locations (checking in at a restaurant, tagging a boutique's address) appears in location-based discovery feeds and search results - extending the campaign reach beyond the creator's followers to anyone searching that location on Instagram or TikTok.

Local review and discovery content. "Best [category] in [city]" content - restaurant roundups, boutique guides, neighbourhood spotlights - is a core SoMoLo format that drives foot traffic from audiences actively seeking local recommendations.

Google Maps and local SEO integration. SoMoLo campaigns with blog or content components contribute to local SEO - a creator writing a review that mentions the brand's address, category, and neighbourhood contributes to the business's local search visibility.

SoMoLo Best Practices

For brands and local businesses running SoMoLo influencer campaigns:

  • Select creators whose audience is demonstrably local (check follower location data in the creator's analytics)
  • Brief creators to include geotags, location tags, and the business's social handle
  • Request Stories content specifically - Stories appear in location-based explore feeds and Stories geofilters
  • Pair influencer content with a Google Business Profile update (new photos, updated hours) to capture the search traffic generated by influencer awareness
